SWEET
HOPE
Karissa Watkins, Age 12, Dominican Republic Mission Trip 2010
I remember my trip to Dominican Republic. I don't remember much, but I do remember how poor everyone was. There were kids everywhere with only one set of clothes and the only water there to clean with or drink was murky. There were starving dogs everywhere and even some cats. I remember walking around and all I could see were fighting children because they didn't have any toys or anything. That experience changed my life. It made me realize how lucky I am to have everything I own. How lucky I am to have more than one set of clothes. To have toys and clean water. Really, they only had their friends and family, but they were so happy with just that. That made me realize that I'm very lucky to have all the stuff that I have. It made me realize I should be more grateful for everything I have. It made me realize that we ALL should be more grateful for what we have.
Going on the mission trip to Mexico this year was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I wasn't sure what to expect with this trip because it was my first time doing anything like this, but it was well worth it. Being in a third world country and being up close and personal with the extreme poverty was very eye-opening for me. To see the conditions that these people endure every single day was heartbreaking and I was so happy that we had the ability to change their lives completely with just one week of our time. Meeting the Mentoza family changed my life and how I view everything. They were so kind and humble regardless of their situation. It was amazing to see how they were still willing to help whenever they could and to give us what we needed on the work site. Building them a house wasn’t a challenging task for our large group, but it had a huge impact on this family. With only 4 days of our time, we were able to give them something that they never dreamed of having and that was the best feeling I have ever felt. This mission trip made me realize that I should be thankful for where I live and not take anything for granted. Being a part of this youth mission trip was the best thing I have ever done. The Mentoza family will forever be in my heart and prayers and I hope I have the opportunity to go on another trip and change more lives
